Michele (and CJ)
Dear Pomona 1, Chino 2, and Ontario students,
My name is Michele and I am the new Student Advisor at your centers. Originally, I am from San Diego. Before I moved here I was a Substitute Teacher for the San Diego Unified School District. I worked for that school district for over ten years (when you meet me do not remind me how old I am).
For those of you who are interested, I am Mexican-American, and yes, I speak Spanish. My grandparents are from Mazatlan, Sinaloa and Phoenix, Arizona. My father is a mechanic and my mother was a stay-at-home mother until I was 5. She then became a Special Ed Assistant and later moved on to become an SDC Teacher. I was raised in the barrio of San Diego and I loved it. My environment really didn't help me become the best student I could be, but, I managed to find a way into college and I finished. With the exception of my mother, my cousins and I are the first in our family to attend college and graduate.
When I started college I didn't know how or when to register for classes. Many of us graduate from high school with a destination in mind, but have no idea how to get there. When this happens it can be discouraging because we feel lost and frsutrated. I don't want any of you to leave OFY without a plan. I will be calling in seniors to schedule an appointment to discuss your future plans. If you are not a senior and would like information about college or training for a specific career, you do not have to wait until you are in the 12th grade. All OFY students are welcome to stop by or schedule an appointment.
